Banksy has successfully kept details of his identity secret, although his real name is believed to be Robert or Robin Banks.
He is the son of a photocopier technician and originally trained as a butcher before becoming involved in the great aerosol boom of the late 1980s.
Originally a freehand artist, he was inspired to use stencils after noticing a stenciled serial number whilst hiding from police under a lorry. The distinctive look of his work, along with his inclusion of strong anti-establishment themes, began to earn him increasing recognition around Bristol and London.

Banksy’s style is now instantly recognisable, with his humorous messages against war and capitalism that often depict animals, soldiers, police officers and children. His art mainly appears on public surfaces such as buildings and walls.

In 2003, Banksy attracted controversy from animal rights activists for his exhibition Turf War where he painted artwork onto the skin of living animals.
