Gilbert was one of the fathers of the Chicano Movement in Los Angeles. He turned a 1950's Chevrolet into a rolling tableau that was the centerpiece of the "Hispanic Art in America, Thirty Painters and Sculptors" that toured the National Gallery in Washington DC, the Brooklyn Museum, The Los Angeles Museum of Art, and two Museums in Santa Fe, while one in Texas.
