These phrases were taken from conversations between three unmarried mothers with their teenage daughters. They were invited to the studio in spring of 2000 for videotaped sessions. They asked each other three questions each. The videotapes were transcribed into paintings, which were shown in the fall of 2000 at Kasmin Gallery. The title of the show was Out of Character.
Would: “You want me to come to you for everything…” from the Cynthia/Angela tape.
Could: “I want to save you from going through…” from the Nina/Sophia tape.
Should: “I don’t want you to be mad at me…” from the Frankie/Tallulah tape.
