Signed, dated and inscribed: "A. C. Dies incise Roma 1794 | Porta scura, o. sia Entrata nella Villa Mecenate". Schinkel's diary entry from October 15, 1824 refers to this tunnel that opens up to the village: "The old road led through the villa in a long, wide, highly vaulted corridor that is still completely preserved [...]] On the big platform [...] above the vaulted ruins of the villa [...] you have an unlimited view of the Roman remoteness." (Schinkel 1979, p. 221).
