inscribed in the lower centre: "Berlin's obedience".
"A lady leads her Bolognese to the left on a gang in windy weather. On the left in the middle a gentleman and a lady goes to the right with a wind chime; on the right an old hunchbacked Jew with a large poodle jumping forward to the left." (Engelmann 1857, p. 400).This rare sequence is not a sequence in the actual sense, in which six different representations of six copper plates are printed. Rather, Chodowiecki only used a copper plate and worked it further and further by adding various figures. Before each addition, he printed the plate and this is how this extraordinary sequence came about. Engelmann notes that the artist "created this plate on the occasion of a police decree that everyone in the streets must lead his dog on a gang" (Engelmann 1857, p. 400).Here the second state with the signature in the first version: "Behind the lady a jockey pulls back with effort a hunting dog, which follows the Bolognese. "To the left in the corner is a dead dog on the ground.".
