Original lithograph in black ink. May 1946. Signed in pencil. Number 186 from the edition of 300 - numbered on the attached original ‘justification’ sheet and also with the signature of Tristan Tzara - see below. Drawn at the Atelier Mourlot 1946. Edition issued in the small album: 'La Signe de Vie' - with a text by Tristan Tzara. (NB There were also 200 examples of the album for which the lithograph was unsigned.)

Note: The writer and poet Tristan Tzara had been a close friend of Matisse since they met in the Surrealist circles of the 1930's. The two prints that Matisse drew for Tzara's little volumes of poetry, the lithograph for ‘La Signe de Vie’ (here), and the etching for ‘Midis Gagnés, were amongst his first prints of the post-war years.
Superb fresh impression. On pale cream light wove paper. Excellent condition. Full margins as issued. Drawn almost to full sheet size, as issued. Sheet: 250 x 180mm.
