The set of twelve in fine, early impressions.
Phyllis Dearborn Massar (Presenting Stefano Della Bella, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1971: p. 96) has summed up the importance of this group of works.
The subjects of this set - artillery transport, troop movements, cavalry clashes, attacks upon towns - came from Stefano’s experiences before Arras...These etchings are among the finest in Della Bella’s oeuvre. The career of the Conte de la Roche-Guyon, the dedicatee of this set of 1644, is summarized in three notices in the Gazette de France: May 19, 1643 he fought at Rocroi; June 1644, was wounded at siege of St. Philippe; August 13, 1646, and then killed at Mardick.
