Andrew Raftery Prints
Andrew Stein Raftery is an American contemporary printmaker, painter and arts educator. Trained in painting and printmaking at Boston University and Yale, he is known for his burin engravings featuring male narratives of contemporary American life. The portfolios "Suit Shopping" published in 2002 and "Open House," 2008, are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the British Museum. In 2004, Raftery's work was featured in Jonathan Weinberg’s book, "Male Desire: The Homoerotic in American Art."
Art historical research is closely aligned with Raftery’s studio practice. He was consulting curator for "The Brilliant Line: The Journey of the Early Modern Engraver," fall 2009 at the RISD Museum and at the Block Museum at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He has been a professor at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) teaching in the printmaking and painting department since 1991. He is a recipient of RISD’s John R. Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2003, Raftery received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. He was elected to membership in the National Academy in 2009.
