Anthony Caro Biography

Anthony Alfred Caro (Born 1924) is abstract sculpter born in England.

He was educated at Charthouse School and then attended Cambridge University to study enginnering. After time in the Royal Navy he studied sculpture at the Regent Street Polytechnic before studying further at the Royal Academy Schools.

Whilst working as an assistant to Henry Moore in the 1950s Caro was introduced to modernism; after being introduced to the American sculptor David Smith Caro started constructing his sculptures from metal.

His first major show was at the whitechapel art gallery in the year 1963. This is where he premiered his trademark abstract welded pieces, often painting in a single bright colour.

In 1987 he Anthony Caro was knighted.
In 1997 he won the lifetime achievement award for sculpture.
He was part of the design team for the millennium bridge that goes from St. Paul’s cathedral across the river Thames to the millennium bridge.
