Lisa Holzer Biography

Lisa Holzer (born in Vienna, Austria in 1971) uses framed photographic prints to create playful compositions of image, text and material. Often using food as point of departure, her motifs are rendered formless and abstracted to develop a painterly quality. Juxtaposing image with fragments of personal text she conjures meanings and relationships which are not always defined. Adding to that, the artist applies materials such as dabs of acrylic paint or drops of polyurethane on the glass of the framed work, which she interprets as sweat, tears, or other substances secreted by her works. Lisa Holzer is busy with desire. By enforcing relationships among food, digestion, emotions and body, she explores what lies underneath today’s increasingly glossy and easily consumable surfaces.

Lisa Holzer has a background in photography. She studied at the Graphische (Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt) and later at the School for Artistic Photography with Friedl Kubelka in Vienna. Her works have been exhibited at Rowing London, New Museum New York, Salzburger Kunstverein, Halle für Kunst und Medien Graz, 21er Haus Vienna, MAK Vienna, Kunsthalle Exnergasse Vienna, among other international galleries and institutions. Today based in Berlin, she is represented by Galerie Emanuel Layr in Vienna and Gillmeier Rech in Berlin.
