Marta Maria Perez Bravo Biography

Marta Maria Perez Bravo is a contemporary Cuban photographer whose dream-like work symbolically depicts her cultural and spiritual ideals. She mainly photographs contrived scenes of still-lifes or self-portraits using small format black and white film. Her identity as a mother, woman, Cuban and practicing member of Santeria all drive her imagery. The photographs she creates allow the viewer to witness her private experiences within these identities.

Bravo received a BFA in painting from San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in 1979. She only became a photographer after experimenting with photography for her thesis while finishing her MFA in painting at the Instituto Superior de Arte in 1984.

Collectors and institutions actively seek her work internationally. She has exhibited among prized galleries as Throckmorton Fine Art in New York and the Cultural Center of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, Spain for the past three decades and remains an influential artist among contemporary collections. Permanent collections of her work can be found at the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Texas, National Museum of Fine Art in Havana, Cuba and museums in Finland and Germany.
