The oeuvre of the Belgian painter, draftsman and writer Philippe Vandenberg (1952 – 2009) is
characterized by an inner search in which various literary, philosophical and art-historical references create a temporary state of wonder. Using image, word and symbol, Vandenberg challenges the ethical context of the work of art. In this way, paintings and drawings live in the present, creating a visually recognizable dialogue with the society in which they were made. In Vandenberg’s art, universal themes such as war, religion, movement, sexuality and death are crucially transformed.
