Philippe Vandenberg Biography

The oeuvre of the Belgian painter, draftsman and writer Philippe Vandenberg (1952 – 2009) is
characterized by an inner search in which various literary, philosophical and art-historical references create a temporary state of wonder. Using image, word and symbol, Vandenberg challenges the ethical context of the work of art. In this way, paintings and drawings live in the present, creating a visually recognizable dialogue with the society in which they were made. In Vandenberg’s art, universal themes such as war, religion, movement, sexuality and death are crucially transformed.
Works by Philippe Vandenberg are owned by collections such as the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent; the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp; Mu.ZEE, Ostend; Museum De Pont, Tilburg; and La Maison Rouge, Paris.
