A giclee print on Hanemuhle etching paper. Signed and numbered (on reverse) in pencil. ‘Body’ realises Gormley’s fascination with the human form. The artist regards the body as the place in which we reside; he speaks of skin as “a vessel for personal space”. Previous decades, throughout the modernist era, saw the human body take a back seat as an object worthy of artistic appraisal. Gormley and his bodies’ insurgence into the art world in the 1980s was, thus, regarded as new – or rather something that had been lost within art history.
