signed and dated: "D: Chodowiecki inv: & sc: 1793" at lower right; inscribed at upper centre: "Der Lebenslauff"; inscribed at lower centre: "IIIe Period". The special feature of this episode is that all eight sheets (Engelmann 698 and 698 a-g) were printed from one and the same plate. "On all eight leaves, which come from a plate, the same landscape is presented, in the middle a bench, behind it a tree surrounded by bushes, on the left a farmhouse, and in the background a church, and only the persons from the first childhood to the old age, as the tree in the middle, which grows from a small tree to an old defoliated tree, are changed. [...] after completion of the first illustration, the above-mentioned changes were engraved after partial grinding." (Engelmann 1857, p. 373).
