signed and dated: "D: Chodowiecki inv: & sculps: 1790" at lower centre; signed and dated: "D: Chodowiecki inv: & sculps 1790" at lower centre. Very rare sheet. This record is the first version of the artist's title vignette for Johann Georg Busch's "Experiences". "The plate failed to etch and was discarded by the artist, the plate ground down and engraved again. However, without the artist's knowledge, a few snipes were made of this." (Engelmann 1857, p. 334)In a letter to Anton Graff, Chodowiecki commented on these prints as follows: "Ao. 1790 in the month January I made two vignettes on a plate to Büsch's experiences in round borders, this plate disappointed me in the scheidewasser, so that I did not even want to make test prints of it, but let it to the copper printer Berger [..] and bathed him to sand them immediately [...] so that I could get it back the next day and start anew, he also sent the other day such a record whereupon I made the vignettes No. 623 and 624. Afterwards I learned that such impressions with round edgings became known since one shows me however none konte I do not worry about it further." Chodowiecki then asks Anton Graff to get one of these very rare prints, which he himself did not possess..
