Between 1969 and 1999 the artist created 39 portraits of his friend and muse, Celia Birtwell, in a variety of media over many years. He developed a particular intimacy with her, losing concern about capturing her likeness and feeling free to experiment since he was so familiar with her face. According to Hockney “Celia has a beautiful face, a very rare face with lots of things in nit which appeal to me. It shows aspects of her like her intuitive knowledge and kindness, which I think is the gratis virtue. To me she is a special person”
