Born and educated in England, David Hockney (b. 1937) is best known for his depictions of bright blue pools and landscapes in sunny southern California. This lithograph, however, is based on a drawing of printer Kenneth Tyler’s pool, located in suburban New York. Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book, 1980 was made in conjunction with the release of the book, Paper Pools, that chronicles the artist’s process for his innovative unique print series, Paper Pools, inspired by that same pool. From August to October in 1978, David Hockney collaborated with Tyler Graphics on this experimental series resulting in twenty-nine unique pool images made by using paper pulp pressed into molds. The book is the artist’s account of how he came to create these groundbreaking works. The lithograph, Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book accompanied a limited number of signed copies of the book. The bold, energetic lines in this lithograph also reveal the influence of Japanese ukioy-e woodblock prints as well as paintings by Claude Monet on Hockney’s depictions of water and pools in particular.
