Gordon Craig; whose mother was the great British actress Ellen Terry, began to learn woodengraving in part to be able to illustrate magazines and theatrical leaflets. In this early wood engraving he uses black and white to dramatize the village on the hill. Its drama is further enhanced by a figure in the lower right corner, almost making the town a backdrop for a production. This impression is pencil annotated at the bottom of the sheet: "Only 150 copies printed. Copy 55." There is a piece of bark in the paper in the margin, beneath the figure on the right. Fine laid tissue paper.
