Elizabeth White Biography

Elizabeth White grew up in Northern Illinois, and lived on the East Coast for twenty years before moving to Ojai in 1993. She received a degree in Studio Art from Stanford University and studied at the Art Institute in Chicago.

White works primarily with pastels, focusing on the interplay among landscape, light, and water. White considers herself to be a landscape artist, but not a typical landscape artist. While many such artists like to stand back to get the grand picture, she likes to zoom in, to create what she likes to think of as a landscape portrait. Her recent focus on succulents has been motivated by the seemingly unending variety of form and colors to be found within them. After growing up in the Midwest and living in the East where succulents are rarely found, she is dazzled by their array. To her, they are the quintessential California plant.
