GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE Genoa 1609 – 1664 Mantua
Tobit Burying the Dead.
Etching with touches of drypoint. Bartsch 5; Percy E 20, only state. An extremely fine impression on Italian paper with a Three Mounts in a Circle watermark, datable to the mid-17th century. In fine condition; trimmed just outside the etched work all around. A very faint water stain upper left in the shaded area.
It is important to note that Castiglione impressions on Italian paper are rare, as are impressions of this etching where the drypoint is clearly visible. This drypoint is most noticeable on the left shoulder of the boy at the right foreground of the image, and as well on the back of the bending figure at the left center, the drapery of the figure above him, and with touches below the eye of the dog at the left and in many other places.
