A small but utterly delightful work from the Elephant Skull portfolio. This was from folio 37, and a copy of the signature and numbering accompanies the etching itself. No examples of this etching were signed. Framed. Moore was given the skull by Julian Huxley. It became a source of intense focus as Moore worked through his exploration of it’s various forms..Moore always stated that besdie the reclining form one of his other major preoccuptaions had been investigating the inner and outer surface of objects, as here.
Details from Cramer: ‘Preface etchings ii, iii, iv were drawn together on one plate measuring 31.0 x 24.0 cms. The plate was then cut in three and the resulting plates were printed on pages 3, 5 and 6 of the preface.” This etching was on page 5.
