Irene Buarque was born in Sao Paulo in 1943. Persecuted by the Brazilian dictatorship, in the early 1970s she applied for a scholarship to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG), on the advice of Fernando Lemos, who referred to the institution as an «Oasis» in Portugal. The scholarship was awarded to her in 1973, allowing her to pursue a postgraduate degree in art history. Since then, her artistic career has crossed several artistic disciplines, such as photography, scenography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, public art (Ameixoeira Metro station, in Lisbon), ceramics and installation.
