An original copper plate etching and engraving on heavy laid paper by Dutch artist Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) titled “Sir Francis Drake”, 1742. Signed in the plate by Houbraken lower right. This engraving is after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller. Comes from the “Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain” portfolio (plate 31), 1743-1752. Printed by John and Paul Knapton and published in parts by Thomas Burch both in London, England. Provenance: private collection – Aspen, CO. Reference: O’Donoghue 20; Ver Huell 24. Full margins. Sheet size: 16″ x 10.75″. Image size: 13.75″ x 8.5″. Uneven discoloration in margins and foxing. Old tape remnants bottom center. Typical signs of wear associated with age. In otherwise generally good condition.
