Palaces, Brussels. 1887. K. 3651i (of ii); G. 338i (of ii). Etching and drypoint, 222 x 140 mm (8.74 x 5.51”), on antique laid paper with a Pro Patria watermark. Signed with the butterfly and “imp” on the tab. A fine impression in excellent condition. Extemely rare, Glasgow cites 16 impressions. Provenance: R. E. Lewis, Inc. (purchased Sotheby Parke-Bernet & Co., New York, 1974).

The Artist

James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Perhaps best known for a painting of his mother titled Whistler’s Mother, James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in Massachusetts but spent much of his time in Europe. Whistler is known as the father of Tonalism which is an artistic style marked by dark hues such as brown or blue and also emphasized mood and shadow.
