An original lithograph on white wove paper by American artist Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) titled “Untitled (1¢ Life)”, 1964. Issued unsigned with centerfold as issued. Comes from the famous 1964 artists’ book “1¢ Life”. Our example comes from the standard limited edition of 2,000. (There were also 100 books issued signed by Sam Francis, Walasse Ting, and Eberhard W. Kornfeld in the Roman alphabet and with Chinese seals, on Ivory wove Rives paper.) Printed by Maurice Beaudet, Paris, France and published by E. W. Kornfeld, Bern, Switzerland in 1964. There are also two lithographs printed on verso by Walasse Ting. (Please see pictures). The artists’ book “1¢ Life” was conceived by Walasse Ting and realized through the logistical and financial support of Sam Francis, who introduced Ting to his gallery manager in Bern, Eberhard W. Kornfeld. The book was printed in Paris by Maurice Beaudet, who Ting met thanks to Pierre Alechinsky. Published by E. W. Kornfeld, Bern, Switzerland and edited by Sam Francis. Poems by Walasse Ting, jacket by Machteld Appel, and typesetting by Georges Girard, Paris. The 176 page book consisted of 68 original lithographs by 27 different artist including Sam Francis, Walasse Ting, James Rosenquist, Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn, Robert Indiana, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Karel Appel, Tom Wesselmann, Joan Mitchell, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenberg, Jim Dine, Mel Ramos and more. Today, complete untouched examples of the book are rare and very desirable to collectors.
