John Sloan (1871-1954), Snowstorm in the Village, etching, 1925, signed, titled and annotated "100 proofs". Reference: Morse 216, third state of three, from the edition of 100, on ivory wove paper, in good condition, with good margins (the slightest light tinge), 7 x 5, the sheet 8 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches, archival mounting. A fine, clear, delicately printed impression of this evocative scene; one of Sloan's great triumphs in printmaking. Sloan noted in discussing this print years 20 years after it was made: "Viewed from my studio on Washington Place [in Greenwich Village], the Jefferson Market Court tower and elevated tracks on Sixth Avenue under a swirl of snow." The Jefferson Market Court tower and the church are still there; the El has been taken down.
