This print and three others are based on works in the exhibition “40 New Paintings by Josef Albers” at the Sidney Janis Gallery, New York, September 28 – October 24, 1964. In the exhibition catalogue, these four paintings were reproduced as screenprints, each measuring 7 x 7 inches. Albers suggested these works to Dr. Carl Bänfer of the Aldegrever Gesellschaft in Münster, and they were duly produced in a larger format for the society’s 1965-66 annual member gifts. The Aldegrever Gesellschaft, named for the sixteenth-century German printmaker Heinrich Aldegrever and founded in 1942, promotes the development of graphic art.
