This first day cover was produced to commemorate the issue of United Nations postage stamps for International
Volunteer Day on the 6th May 1988.

Adopted by the UN to celebrate the contribution of volunteers and their role in making peace and sustainable development a reality, its philosophy was very much in keeping with Haring’s approach to life. From the earliest days of his career he was a devoted social activist, acutely aware of the political issues surrounding his work. To mark IVD 1988 Haring produced an original lithograph featuring two interlocking figures, a wonderful testament to the spirit of collaboration and openness that marked his oeuvre.

Featuring a reproduction of this lithograph and two of the stamps franked on their day of issue, this first day cover was signed in black marker by Haring at the UN in New York.

The Artist

Keith Haring

For Keith Haring, printmaking was an ideal “middle ground,” a means of bridging his original artwork with the affordable clothing, posters, buttons, and other commercially produced items that featured his artwork.
