Noon is a set of finely detailed etchings: portraits of two young Southwestern musicians, Ryan Bingham and Matthew Smith. Kiki Smith was attracted to their music, and to their un-tethered lifestyle of touring and traveling the United States. Composed horizontally as landscapes, the prints have a cinematic quality reminiscent of early panoramic photography or of film stills from an Italian Western. They are infused with a sense of the vastness and romanticism of the American west, but also evoke the desolate harshness of such a landscape and the pathos of the hardscrabble lives found there. As in past etchings of finely delineated animals and similarly executed portraits, Smith focused on the details of the musician’s faces and hair. She intentionally used only hard ground line etch, built up in numerous states of varied etch times, to capture the variations, shadows and luminosity in their eyes and the hue of their skin. The linear technique references the conceptual starkness of the imagery, and the result is an arresting pair of portraits, confident in gaze and character. Noon was printed in black ink on Hahnemühle soft white paper. The prints are sold as a set of two.
