Although known predominately as a sculptor, Bourgeois also created an important body of prints. This aspect of her work was concentrated towards the early and late phases of her career. After a long hiatus she returned to printmaking in the 1980s as her work was generating increasing international acclaim. One of her key themes was the exploration of bodily experience, often with feminist and surrealistic undertones. This print was published as part of the ‘Anatomy Portfolio’, a series of eleven etchings and one multiple. A complete set is held in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
