This edition is sheet 16 from “La Fontaine’s Fables”, a project for the famous art dealer Ambroise Vollard, which Chagall worked on between 1927-1930 and was published in 1952. It is in stunning condition and is beautifully hand-signed in pencil.
Vollard’s choice of Marc Chagall to illustrate La Fontaine’s work created an uproar at the time; Chagall’s dreamy, romantic touch deemed too wistful to accompany the classical French masterpiece. Vollard insisted on Chagall by declaring that Chagall bridged the gap between their respective styles, saying about Chagall, “…his aesthetic seems to me in a certain sense akin to La Fontaine’s, at once sound and delicate, realistic and fantastic.”
