Three plate, three color direct gravure etching on handmade Hamada Kozo printed chine collé backed with Somerset satin white 300 gram paper, trimmed bleed. Co-published by Catharine Clark Gallery and Mullowney Printing, San Francisco, CA and Portland, OR in an edition of 35 plus 10 proofs, signed and numbered on the verso in pencil. Printed by Erin McAdams, Wendy Liu, and Harry Schneider.
Drawing inspiration for the artist’s series “The Cloisters Last Supper” (2010 – ongoing), Masami Teraoka’s gravure depicts a geisha and the Madonna in a sexually frank, pieta-like pose. The image articulates a relationship between sexual freedom and individual liberty in contrast to the Catholic Church’s dogma against non-procreative physical intimacy. Geisha and Madonna also signals a return to Teraoka’s signature ukiyo-e style where volume and space are rendered through expressive lines and contours. Combining motifs from Renaissance painting and traditional Japanese woodcuts, Teraoka’s newest print epitomizes the artist’s interest in art historical and cultural hybridity.
