Niccolò Boldrini (ascribed to): Hercules and the Nemean Lion (after Raphael). Chiaroscuro woodcut on laid paper, 41 x 28,5 cm. C. 1530.
The interesting variant presented here was printed using only the key block, with the blocks for the additional color(s) being omitted. Instead, there are several old pen additions. Some of them may not have been intended to replace lines that have been lost due to the deterioration of the plate as they add new details (mainly background vegetation) to the subject that are missing even in early impressions.
Interestingly, both the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the ETH in Zurich house copies from the key block, the MET also a copy printed from 2 blocks.
