Paul Klee (1879-1940), Spiegelndes Fenster (Reflecting Window), etching, 1915, signed in pencil “Klee” and with the date and work number lower left (“1915 211 bis”) [also dated and annotated 211 bis in the plate lower left]. Reference: Kornfeld 64 (Werke 1913-1918, Nr. 1546), only state, from the edition of about 10 impressions. In excellent condition, on Japan cream wove paper, the full sheet with wide margins, 6 1/4 x 4 1/2, the sheet 13 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches. A fine rich impression of this rare, complex cubist/expressionist composition. Klee was relatively isolated as a primarily graphic artist until the Blue Rider exhibit of 1911-12 introduced him to leading figures in contemporary art; shortly thereafter he visited Paris where he was moved by the Cubist work he saw there. In 1914 he visited Tunis with fellow expressionist August Macke, and one might speculate that this visit to North Africa is related to the imagery of Spiegelndes Fenster made shortly thereafter, e.g., the pyramidal shapes toward the center, the needle upper right, tentlike patterns throughout, etc.
