In 1969, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) invited Robert Rauschenberg to witness the launch of the Apollo 11 mission. The NASA Art Program offered Rauschenberg access to NASA’s facilities, buildings, archival photographs, and technical documents to enable him to commemorate the historic mission. Soon after the launch, the artist began work on a series of 34 lithographs titled, “Stoned Moon” (1969-70). The prints were produced in collaboration with the Los Angeles-based master printers, Gemini G.E.L.
