Saskia Saunders creates work which is a calm pause, a moment of contemplation in our busy world.
Primarily working with domestic, everyday materials such as parchment paper, string and household linens. These humble materials are sensitively woven, wrapped and manipulated, as she experiments in ways to seek light and space within her work.
Inspired by her travels in Japan, Saunders explores the concepts of Ma (間), negative space, and Wabi-sabi (侘寂), embracing transience and imperfections. These guide her to making tactile work, seeking simplicity, focus and space to breathe.
Saunders’ work is pared back and minimalist, allowing the viewer to focus on texture and detail.
