‘Wheel Track Mars’ 2012

Science Photo Library Print

View of a wheel track mark from NASA’s Curiosity rover in a ripple of windblown sand and dust at the ‘Rocknest’ site on the surface of Mars. This site was selected as the location for first use of the scoop on the arm of NASA’s Curiosity rover. The rover deliberately created this mark to give researchers a better opportunity to examine the particle-size distribution of the material forming the ripple. Imaged by Curiosity’s right Navigation camera, on the mission’s 57th Martian day, or sol (3rd October 2012). The width of the wheel track is about 40 centimetres. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
