the date on the left-hand margin, on todoke Meiji – nen – hachi gatsu – niche (respectfuly reporting Meiji – year – 8th month – day) followed by the address of the publisher, Hongin-cho, Ni-chome, Juni banchi (Hongin [Ginza] area, 2nd town, 12th district), his name, Takegawa Seikichi, and the carver’s mark Hori Gin, ca. 1884

This composition depicts Genji’s mother Kiritsubo seated before her mirror in preparation to see her husband, the Emperor. An attendant holds an ornate robe on a tray, presumably the overly sumptuous robe which was given to Kiritsubo by the Emperor. The gift invited much jealousy in the court.
