Artist Focus | Takashi Murakami

Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami (b.1962) is known for blurring the boundaries between popular culture and fine art. Murakami does so by incorporating traditional Japanese painting techniques with a mix of pop and otaku – a term in Japanese that explains the obsession with cartoons and anime – on a flattened picture-plane.

This combination of styles is defined by the artist as “superflat” works, a movement which he founded in 2000. Besides being known for bringing colour into the infamous brown/neutral Louis Vuitton pattern, he is also recognized for his character Mr. Dob. His other works that are of major significance are his works with brilliantly coloured flowers with happy faces.
