Danny Augustine Exhibition

Natural’s Not In It, new body of works by Royal College MA Printmaking Graduate, Danny Augustine

A solo exhibition of ten new limited edition screenprints at Jealous Gallery, Shoreditch,1-4th October

Private View: 1st October 6-9pm

Jealous Gallery East is set to host a four-day solo exhibition dedicated to new works from artist Danny Augustine. Natural’s Not In It re-examines long held ideas that have developed throughout art history and have been the foundations of our standards of beauty and morals, explored via ten new screenprint editions, each a limited edition of two.

Using classical works from antiquity, through to the modern day as his source material, Augustine displace the familiar from its context through striking colour and lose brush work inviting you to lose your predispositions and question your susceptibility.

Augustine’s unique screenprinting method is a pivotal aspect in the development of his artistic practice, freely layering imagery and colour, allowing the work to change and develop, sometimes unexpectedly throughout creation. He explains: “A lot of screenprinters today finalise an image on Photoshop, before work is created, then break it into colours and print it. There isn’t anything wrong with this method of printing but it can restrict any sense of experimentation and exploration of the piece in question. I find it quite difficult working in this way because once the image has been created and finalised on the computer screen I instantly lose interest and become disheartened by making something I’ve already seen, almost like being told what happens at the end of a book.”

The addition of paint, photography and drawing emerges through a personal relationship Augustine cultivates with the original work, creating a dialogue between the machine, art history and individual. The works utilize all of these techniques to offer a new vision of classical beauty and morals in a contemporary context.

Danny Augustine

Born in 1986 and raised in Hackney, Danny studied Fine Art at the University of East London and  graduated in MA Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Danny’s practice deals predominantly  with ideas of identity and gender, and how it is portrayed in today’s society, be it male, female,  transgender or homosexual. Playing with a narrative which starts out as hope quickly becomes a  hegemony of power and a carnival of vice. His work explores the role of desire, lust and sexuality  play in contemporary society.
