New York-based artist Julia Jacquette (b. 1964) is best known for exploring the realms of desire and sentiment through images of food and everyday commodities. In 2000, the Museum of Modern Art featured Jacquette’s series of paper plates, cups and napkins, as part of their on-going exhibition project titled Projects 69. In this project, Jacquette tackled some of the recurring themes also found in her prints, particularly the relationships between human longing and materiality.
For example, her tightly cropped etching of details of wedding cakes, titled White on White (2001), invites us to consider cultural attitudes of gender, human bodies, and notions of individuality. Jacquette completed her M.F.A. at Hunter College in 1992. In 1998, she received a Pollock/Krasner Grant. She has had solo exhibitions at Michael Steinberg Fine Art (2004), The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, and Holly Soloman Gallery, New York, NY.
