Math Bass Biography

Math Bass began her career primarily as a performance artist, but she has slowly been recognized for her paintings, sculptures, video, and prints. Bass employs the symbols and colors akin to sign systems to create a visual vocabulary . Her compositions play with signs, space, and movement, allowing for multiple interpretations of the same image.

Bass received a BA from Hampshire College, Amherst in 2003 and an MFA from University of California, Los Angeles in 2011. In 2015, MoMA PS1 presented the inaugural solo museum exhibition of Math Bass in the United States (curated by Mia Locks). She was included in The Hammer Museum’s ‘Made in L.A.’ Biennial in 2012, and has shown elsewhere in Los Angeles at Overduin & Co., Human Resources, 356 Mission Rd., Night Gallery, and Thomas Duncan Gallery, and Cirrus Gallery. Bass has also shown internationally: at Tanya Leighton in Berlin, and at The Yuz Museum in Shanghai where they hosted her first solo exhibition in China in 2017.

Her recent exhibitions include: ‘My Dear Dear Letter”, Mary Boone Gallery, New York, NY; “Eyes of March”, Cirrus Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; “Bloomies”, Michael Jon and Alan, Miami Beach, FL; “Off the Clock”, MoMA PSI, New York, NY; “Lies Inside”, Overduin & Co., Los Angeles, CA; and “Made in LA”, Los Angeles, CA. Her work can be found in a number of collections including the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and Yuz Museum, Shanghai, China.

Bass currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
