Ryan McGinness Biography

American Ryan McGinness was born in 1972 and lives and works in Manhattan, New York. He is painter, sculptor and installation artist who employs graphic design techniques by using logos, symbols and letter fonts in his work. His work can be found in the permanent public collections of numerous art institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Cincinnati Art Museum and the Misumi Collection in Japan. McGinness studied at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on an Andrew Carnegie Scholarship, during which time he was an intern at the Andy Warhol Museum as a curatorial assistant.

Ryan McGinness’ work draws influence from the Pop Art movement. He works with a variety of colour palettes, from crisp black and white to chaotic, multi coloured splashes of images. At first glance these pieces may seem random, but upon closer inspection the collage of images is organised and deliberate, showing an obsessive attention to detail. He is also known for his use of contrast, demonstrated in his 2008 work Aesthetic Comfort. The piece includes colourful circles and images in its centre, while the outer borders are made up of precise, calligraphy flourishes. He is renowned for using his skills in graphic design, silkscreen and printing methods are to create complex patterns that come together to form pieces that are both delicate and bold.
