Stephan Balkenhol was born in 1957 in Germany. He studied at the Hamburg School of Fine Arts from 1976 until 1982, under the strictly minimalist teacher Ulrich Ruckreim. His early work consisted of single male or female nude sculptures attached to pedestals, reminiscent of Egyptian and Greek statues.
From the 1980s Balkenhol continued to depict human figures, but in the present day he depicts relatively normal-looking people wearing clothing. In the 1990s he began to creative animal figures, either alone or in combination with humans.
