Elisa Arruda Prints

Elisa Arruda (1987) is a visual artist born in the Amazon region. She has a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urbanism from FAUUSP (2017) and currently lives between Belém and São Paulo, Brazil. Her works are represented by Galeria B_arco (SP).

Elisa’s poetic interest is centered on the condition of women, that is, the reliefs and layers of time that life and its crossings add to the female body. Themes related to memory, bonds of affection, ruptures, motherhood, everyday life and maturation are subscribed in her works.

Her production is an analytical and fictional narrative, which reverberates poetry, music and daily speech through reworkings and studies. Her works are presented as stories expressed in pictorial gestures, through the work developed with paper and sculptural bodies. It’s an opening voice for her character and her living space to be presented. However, her creations are more than versions of herself. The works are a mirror. The artist sees herself, but invites the public to recognize themselves too, in their own bodies and social realities. This mirror speaks for itself, as in Sylvia Plath’s poem “Mirror”: “I am not cruel, only truthful.”

In Elisa Arruda’s trajectory, drawing was the starting point, but over the years different techniques emerged as narrative possibilities. Drawing is the basis, but engraving, photography and video recording appear as supports, combined with objects and the physical matter of her everyday life.

Elisa Arruda held solo exhibitions curated by Alexandre Sequeira (PA), Vânia Leal (PA), Julia Lima (SP), Renato de Cara (SP) and Yohana Junker (USA). Her work was awarded by art institutions throughout Brazil, such as the Marcello Grassmann Centre (2021), the Banco da Amazônia Cultural Space (2021), the Sacilotto Hall (2020), the Itajaí Hall (2018) and the House of Arts from Pará (2017).
