Iain Macnab Biography

Iain Macnab of Barachastlain
1890-1967
Scottish wood-engraver and painter.

Born in Philippines to Scottish parents. When young they moved to Scotland where in 1917 he studied at Glasgow School of Art. This was followed by Heatherley’s in 1918 and from 1919 to 1925 he was principal of Heatherley’s School of Art.
After this he became the founding principal of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Students included Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews amongst others.
Until 1926 MacNab worked as an etcher, turning his attention to wood engraving, a medium in which he excelled.
