Jean Delville Biography

1867–1953

Belgian Symbolist painter, writer, poet, polemicist and occultist. In his work he tried to express spiritual and philosophical ideas rather than material reality.

He started his studies at the Académie des Beaux-arts in Brussels at age 12. After winning various awards he continued his studies in Italy after winning the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1895. Later he taught at the Glasgow School of Art and the Académie des Beaux-arts in Brussels. He founded the Salons d'Art Idéaliste which promoted spiritual art and several other art societies.
