The Artist

Maurice Bugeaud

Active as a Key member of the Beat Generation Artist scene in mid-century New York City, Bugeaud's artwork frequently spans style categories from Abstract Expressionism to textured geometric compositions, landscapes, and cityscapes. He worked with multiple mediums, producing oil paintings, acrylics, original lithographs, and unique works on paper. In May 1959, he won a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study art in Europe. To celebrate, he hosted a legendary "Rent-a-Beatnik" party inside his waterfront loft at Christie and Division Streets in Lower Manhattan, Staged in collaboration with Holiday magazine and documented by legendary photojournalists Burt Glinn and Fred W. McDarrah, the event featured a live jazz band comprising notable figures like Ahmed Abdul-Malik, Danny Barker, and Kenny Davern.
