Michael Barnes is an American artist and printmaker whose practice is rooted in a deep engagement with the art of printmaking. Based in Illinois, where he studied fine art, he has taught printmaking at Northern Illinois University since 1998, sharing his knowledge and passion for the medium with generations of students.
Alongside his artistic and teaching practice, Barnes has served on juries for international printmaking competitions. His work is represented in important collections in the United States, Belgium, France, Finland, and Estonia, reflecting his place within the international printmaking community.
His prints explore the complexities of human nature and the uncertainties of existence. Through solitary figures inhabiting strange, often desolate landscapes, Barnes creates unsettling and sometimes absurd scenes that reflect on isolation, mortality, and the contradictions of contemporary life. Combining a strong sense of narrative with an enigmatic, surreal atmosphere, his work invites viewers to look beyond the image itself and reflect on the deeper questions it raises about humanity and the world we inhabit.
