Litten was a British printmaker known for his architectural etchings, particularly of historic British and European cities. His etching of White Horse Close captures one of Edinburgh’s most famous and picturesque historical courtyards. The work exemplifies Litten’s attention to architectural detail and his talent for capturing the character of urban environments. The atmospheric rendering of the structure and the figures, including a bagpipe player,  were undoubtedly influenced by Whistler. Built in 1603, the White Horse Close is still standing in Edinburgh.

The Artist

Sidney Mackenzie Litten

(1887–1934)
British etcher, engraver, mezzotint artist and educator. Trained at St. Martin’s School of Art and under Frank Short at the Royal College of Art, Litten rose to become Senior Master (and later Vice-Principal) at St. Martin’s. Drawing on his travels in Spain and Italy, he produced finely detailed, atmospheric series—most notably of Venice and the Thames—that blend rigorous realism with poetic, dreamlike sensibility. His work is marked by both technical precision and a luminous, imaginative depth.
